Introduction to Blu-ray

Blu-ray, also known as Blu-ray Disc (BD), is the name of the most technologically advanced optical disc storage medium on the market. Blu-ray was developed by the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA), which is a group of the worlds leading consumer electronics, computer hardware and motion picture companies. The BD disc has the same physical dimensions as a standard DVD and CD, but its main advantages are more storage space for data and the ability to store high-definition video. This allows Blu-ray players to play the highest quality movies at 1080p resolution with an HDMI cable. Blu-ray Disks are able to hold up to ten times more storage capacity than a traditional DVD, that is 25GB on a single-layer disc and 50GB on a dual-layer disc. Recent developments by Pioneer players have pushed the storage capacity to 500GB on a single disc by using 20 layers but they are still developiing and perfecting the technology.

If you like burning with your existing DVD burner on your computer, you will love a Blu-ray burner. The Blu-ray format is able to store much more data due to its blue-violet laser which has a shorter wave length than the DVD standard of a red laser. This offers the Blu-ray media to focus the laser with even greater precision offering the data to be packed more tightly and use less space on the disc. That is where is can hold ten times as much data, a DVD single layer will hold 4.7GB where as a dual-layer Blu-ray disc will hold 50GB. Many Bly-ray players are backwards compatible with DVD and CD discs so you can watch your current collection.

On Going Development

The companies in the Blu-ray Disc Association are working on improving Blu-ray discs and making them cheaper. There are over 1200 Blu-ray movies currently on Blu-ray discs and they are always releasing more every week. Currently, the companies are working on making quad-layer 100GB discs, 200GB discs and even a 20 layer 500GB disc. There are also Mini Blu-ray Discs which have been developed for compact camcorders and other compact recording devices. But the most exciting development has to be the recordable Blu-ray disc. As with DVD, they will have a single use disc or BD-R and a disc that can be erased and re-recorded multiple times, the BD-RE. The first recordable discs were released in February 2008 and in March 2008, BD-R gained official support from the Sony Playstation 3. If you are in the market to upgrade or start your home entertainment system, a Blu-ray player and/or a Blu-ray recorder are must have items for any entertainment enthusiast.

How to Avoid Being a Casualty of the Blu-ray Vs. Hd DVD War

Monday, January 5th, 2009
With the advent of a new generation of high density discs to replace DVDs, it is easy for consumers to be confused about which format to upgrade to. The two competing formats, Blu-Ray and HD DVD, both offer a significant upgrade in video and audio quality; but as standalone players for both formats can retail for several hundreds of pounds, it is understandable that consumers do not want to end up buying the new Betamax.

In terms of technical performance both formats are similar, and show little discernible difference to the average consumer. A dual-layer Blu-Ray disc offers 50GB of storage space, compared to 30GB on a dual-layer HD DVD disc, but as of yet, only 40% of Blu-Ray releases are dual-layer, with the remaining 60% being single-layer discs utilising 25GB of storage space. Still, even when comparing a 50GB Blu-Ray disc with a 30GB HD DVD, the difference to consumers will be minimal. Both formats support the MPEG-2, VC-1, and H.264 formats for video compression, and Dolby Digital, PCM, and DTS for audio compression. As a result, this battle of formats is going to be waged mainly via the titles available and the price and quality of players.

Initially, both formats were supported by all of the major studios, but as different studios have different stakes in the two formats, major studios started to drop formats. For example, Sony, owner of Columbia and TriStar Pictures, is one of the major developers of the Blu-Ray format, and has decided to drop HD DVD for its releases. Thus, Spiderman 3 is only available for Blu-Ray, something which will surely irk Spidey-loving HD DVD adopters. Releases on both formats tend to be priced similarly, a little more than their standard DVD counterparts.

When it comes to the players, a lot has happened, even in the past year. The first generation of standalone players for the two formats, released last year by Toshiba, Samsung and Panasonic, were seen as pricey and more aimed at early adopters than the general public, and have already been discontinued.

The latest generation of players have generally been seen as more value for money, but the smart money says to look elsewhere for now. Sony decided to include Blu-Ray playing capability for the Playstation 3 Console, which was undoubtedly a wise business move. It means the 5 million current PS3 owners already have a Blu-Ray player and gives those unsure which format to switch to an incentive to buy a PS3 as a low-risk option – even if Blu-Ray does go the way of the Betamax, they still have a state-of-the-art gaming console. In a similar tactic, consumers can now buy an HD DVD drive for the Xbox 360, which can also connect to a high-end PC via a USB connection.

As for now, Blu-Ray has the edge in the format war. Figures by Nielsen VideoScan, Gfk and the Nikkei, show that Blu-Ray is outselling HD DVDs at a ratio of 2 to 1 in the US and Europe and a ratio of 9 to 1 in Japan. This does not mean the battle is over just yet – a lot can still happen, particularly if Nintendo should decide to throw their hat in the ring by announcing an external player for either format for the Wii (a drive for normal DVDs will be released next year).

Hopefully at the end of the format war, the ultimate benefactor will be customers and not the corporations, but until then alternatives to standalone players can provide an affordable way to enjoy the best video and audio quality available for home viewing.

Learning About What Is Blue Ray Technology

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008
It seems like every couple of years there are new advances made and our technology springs forward. Sometimes it can be difficult to keep up with all of the incredibly fast paced advances made. Currently, blue ray technology has been brought into the mainstream and learning what this technology is can keep consumers up to date with the latest inventions in home entertainment.

Discovering What Is Blue Ray Technology

For many, home movies were originally played on the classic vcr tape. Then, the technology moved onto DVD players, and the look of the movies was sharper and of a much better quality. Now the next evolution has started with blue ray technology.

Finding out about what it is includes learning about the differences between this kind of technology and the current mass marketed DVD systems. This new kind of technology has been developing for years, since the mid 1990's when HDTV's were becoming more common for consumers to buy. A technology was needed that could record and play back the high definition recordings. Blue Ray technology was created to fill that void.

So what is so special with this technology and how is it different from the standard DVD? BR technology can store far more information that the traditional DVD, almost 5 times more storage is available on a blue ray disc. The blue ray discs use a blue ray laser to read the information where other DVD's use a red laser.

With a blue laser the wave length is shorter allowing for more storage to be used. This did cause some problems originally, as the discs were much easier to scratch. The case that held the disc had to be made more durable and was somewhat bulky. Advances in polymer coatings have advanced allowing for a better protective coating to be placed on the disc, alleviating the need for the bigger containers.

There are many companies that have a stake in the development of the next cutting edge technology and these companies are looking into both blue ray technology and a HD DVD. Some of the big companies are fighting over which technology should be used and this has caused a split in which companies support which format. Even companies that produce movies are split over which type of technology to use, which means depending on what movie a consumer wishes to purchase; they may need two different types of players.

Both the blue ray and the hddvd players are continuing to improve. In the end, consumers may discover that they enjoy both types of players and they both may be successful with consumers. Learning about what is this technology exactly can help a consumer get a good idea of basic information in regards to this new technology.

The Consumer Wins with HD or Blue Ray

Friday, December 19th, 2008
Next generation home video format wars always end up confusing the consumer to start off, and it can take several years before one format gains dominance over the other. This was the case with the VHS versus Betamax format war, and thankfully the various companies quickly came together to develop the DVD, or digital video/versatile disc, so that became dominant with no competition. Unfortunately, various companies have banded together into two different camps, and now a new format war has been created where consumers are asked if they want HD or Blue ray, and many choose neither for now.

Making a Wise Investment

Through 2006 and 2007, people would have to choose to go with either HD or Blue ray on a relative whim as both offered about the same amount of movies from major movie studios. Near the start of 2008 though, Warner Bros. decided to go Blue ray exclusive, resulting in a majority of movies being released on Blue ray over HD-DVD, helping consumers to choose HD or Blue ray. While many people could argue the pros and cons of both formats, having two competing formats only ended up hurting everyone as companies released movies that nobody bought and consumers risked making a high definition movie player purchase only to find out that months later, no more movies would be released for it. By making most of the movies be released on a single format, movie studios help to ensure that consumers can choose HD or Blue ray without wasting their money.

HD-DVD players might be a little bit cheaper, but Blue ray discs offer superior data capacity, resulting in greater longevity as studios put more content onto discs for consumers to enjoy. However, by making consumers choose HD or Blue ray, studios allowed another format to gain traction. Downloadable videos have gained popularity as they work on all computers with a high speed Internet connection, which is becoming the dominant form of connection in all countries around the world. Many people prefer to actually be able to hold their purchase in their hands (as is the case with DVD's or Blue ray discs), but by buying a next gen video format, they might have ended up wasting their hard earned money, so they preferred to download movies to their hard drive instead of risking wasting a thousand dollars or more.

Blue ray is expected to gain even more traction in 2008, helping consumers to easily choose HD or Blue ray. As prices come down and the selection of movies grows, then more people will upgrade to Blue ray over their old DVD player. With more special features and high definition video and audio, this format is the clear choice for the next generation home theater experience.

Starting My High Definition Movie Collection

Thursday, December 11th, 2008
We just bought a Blue ray HD DVD player for our HDTV. After we got it hooked up, which took a while... I, for some reason or another just realized that I did not have any HD movies for me to see on it. Well I already knew which one I wanted to see foremost and that was Planet Earth.

So I got on the net and purchased it from an online outlet. The bad thing tho' is that I had to wait three days; nonetheless I did reserve myself around twenty dollars, so it was worth the wait. So it came with multiple disks with around three to four episodes of Planet Earth on each of the disks.

If you did not know already each film of Planet Earth is one hour long. So once I put in Planet Earth to scope on our HDTV I went to the menu of the first disk for the opening broadcast. As you can ideate it was quite impressive how substantially the illustration looked.

All of the landscapes were rotund as can be in color and the animals looked as if they were moving across the screen as they moved. I was impressed also on how well Planet Earth was filmed with a HDTV camera. Many of the animals they film in the flick looks as if they are right there close to them and the animals are not even being disturbed by them being around.

It is really the most awesome movie of its type. One installment that really impressed me is the freshwater one. In the opening of it, it shows Angel ... the highest water descend in the world. Then it starts to break off from there and shows the special animals that live in the freshwater environment.

Another attribute Planet Earth does is how good it shows the over view of the elevation. Several shots are taken in high Earth altitudes while others are from space showing the landscape and everything around it.

The space shots are also one of my preferred things to look at. Of course on our HDTV it looks as smashing as it possibly can but it gives you a belief of how bittie the Earth truly is but at the same time when it talks about many of the environments it feels that the world is very monolithic.

When you are watching Planet Earth you may get to an environment that they begin to address about that upright looks extrinsic to you. Few of the things that are in the environment seem as if it was not proper and you can not even ideate about being in several of these places in real life.

One that truly shows what I am talking about is the caves program. Basically what it shows you is the underground world of Earth. How things form under the surface and the uncanny little creatures that inhabit the caves.

It is genuinely something that will be hard for most people on the planet to conceive once they have seen any of the awing animals that live on it. This docudrama is truly amazing especially if viewed on a HDTV!

High Definition, What Are You Waiting On!

Wednesday, December 10th, 2008
If you want to be as up to date as you can be when it comes to home recreation and media, then one of the unexceeded purchases you can make right now is a high definition television set. With every passing day these appliances are seemly more and more inexpensive and convenient to the common being and there are a lot of reasons to buy one.

Many consumers recollect what it felt like to buy their first TV when they were youthful so numerous years ago and this feeling is something that can be relived by getting a high definition TV.

The crispness of the image and the clarity of sound are so much finer than the initial televisions that came on the marketplace that you believe as tho' you aren't watching a television, but are looking through a pane into another world. The images on these televisions are genuinely that crisp and clear.

Most people need to own the biggest TV they can afford, ever since big screen televisions came onto the marketplace back during the 80's. A big screen HDTV can cost a few thousand dollars, but you don't have to have one of these to revel the experience of high definition shows.

What's even nicer is that more and more cable and satellite companies are beginning to feature a tremendous amount of HD stations (although, accessible only to those who desire to acquire them). Unfortunately, if you cannot afford to pay the additional cost to obtain the HD channels on your cable or satellite bill every month, you may get caught using your HDTV to only watch movies that you have purchased on Blu-ray DVDs.

This could be a waste, so unless you can afford to pay for the high definition service your cable or dish company offers, you should stay with your regular television until you can.

In addition to TV's, there are also different components that you can acquire that come with HD technology. High definition video cameras are good for people who would use them all the time, but likely a waste for those people who don't use video cameras really often. Lots of video games are being sold in HD format recently, too.

High definition format will likely be the minimum standard within the succeeding few years, but it may take most of us a while to catch up and hold enough money to get the HD electronics we need. The prices will keep falling down, tho', it might not take as long as you think.

Blue-Ray Version Of “Planet Earth” Is Wonderful!

Thursday, December 4th, 2008
We just bought a Blue ray HD DVD player for our HDTV. After we got it hooked up, which took a spell... I, for some reason or another just realized that I did not have any HD movies for me to see on it. Fortunate I already knew which one I sought to see firstly and that was Planet Earth.

So I got on the cyberspace and purchased it from an online outlet. The bad occurrence though is that I had to wait three days; nonetheless I did reserve myself around twenty dollars, so it was worth the wait. So it came with multiple disks with around three to four episodes of Planet Earth on each of the disks.

If you did not know already each episode of Planet Earth is one hour long. So once I put in Planet Earth to analyse on our HDTV I went to the listing of the premiere disk for the premier film. As you can ideate it was quite amazing how fine the picture looked.

All of the landscapes were rotund as can be in vividness and the animals looked as if they were graceful across the screen as they moved. I was impressed also on how well Planet Earth was filmed with a HDTV camera.

Some of the animals they picture in the movie looks as if they are right there close to them and the animals are not even being disturbed by them being around. It is really the most impressive movie of its type. One programme that really impressed me is the freshwater one.

In the kickoff of it, it shows Angel ... the highest water descend in the world. Then it starts to break off from there and shows the rare animals that live in the freshwater environment. Another thing Planet Earth does is how well it shows the over view of the elevation.

Many shots are taken in high Earth altitudes while others are from space viewing the landscape and everything around it. The space shots are also one of my preferred things to look at.

Of course on our HDTV it looks as superior as it possibly can but it gives you a intuition of how bitty the World truly is but at the same minute when it talks about many of the environments it feels that the world is very gargantuan.

When you are watching Planet Earth you may get to an environment that they begin to speak about that just looks alien to you. Many of the things that are in the surroundings seem as if it was not proper and you can not even imagine about being in some of these places in real life.

One that truly shows what I am talking about is the caves instalment. Essentially what it shows you is the underground world of Earth. How things work under the surface and the uncanny little creatures that inhabit the caves.

It is truly something that will be hard for most people on the planet to conceive once they have seen any of the impressive animals that live on it. This infotainment is truly awesomel especially if viewed on a HDTV!

High Def and Next Gen with Blue Ray DVD Players

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008
If you want to experience high definition content, as most people definitely want to do, then you'll need a Blue ray DVD player. With Warner Bros' recent decision to go Blue-Ray exclusive, more movies than ever before are coming out on it, and the only way to watch them is with a BR DVD player. However, you don't have to worry about your old movies becoming obsolete anytime soon, as all of these players will play standard DVD's just fine, so here's what you should know about them.

Upgrading from DVD

The DVD or digital video/versatile disc was a phenomenal success and nobody can deny that. However, LCD and plasma televisions have dramatically increased in sales, and consumers are now clamoring for high definition content. Unfortunately, DVD's are incapable of storing the appropriate amounts of data needed for this high definition content (at least more than a few minutes of it), so Blue ray and HD-DVD were developed as two rival formats, and it looks as if Blueray will definitely come out on top now, making the decision of upgrading to a next generation home theater format far less riskier. Its discs can hold about 10x the amount of data as normal DVD's, so you'll get to see your favorite movies with never before seen clarity, but you'll need the right DVD player first.

As mentioned above BR DVD players, as part of their standard, can play standard DVD movies, so you can move your DVD player to another room or just get rid of it altogether as this will replace that. Also, most (but not quite all) DVD players can play CD's, giving them multiple uses in your home theater and stereo. With a myriad of tiers, you can choose from basic two or three hundred dollar as basic players up to fifteen hundred dollar elite players. Most consumers will be quite happy with the basic DVD players while enthusiasts may want to choose the expensive versions.

Not only can you purchase stand alone players, but you can also get players that fit into your personal computer. Watch these kind of movies on your computer monitor or hook your computer up to your television. No matter what type of Blue Ray DVD player you get, you'll be able to watch 1080p movies with unparalleled visual and audio fidelity, but you'll want an appropriate television or monitor to go with that. To watch 1080p content in 1080p, you'll need a 1080p capable television or monitor (televisions are rated at 720p, 1080p, etc., while monitors at 1680x1050, 1920x1200, 2560x1600, etc.). For monitor's you'll need that can support 1920x1080, which is 1080p's actual resolution. You can still watch Blue ray movies on monitors less than 1080p, but they'll be downgraded. To watch everything in high def, you'll need a Blue ray DVD player.
